Vampires in this world are not something 'cool' that everyone wants to become. They are not the angsty romantic heroes that every girl or boy throws them self at, proclaiming their unconditional love. Vampires in this universe are beings that should be feared and, as some believe, hunted down and killed.
Appearance: Vampires usually have fair to very pale skin tones, sometimes even looking albino. Their hair and eyes remain the same colour that it was when they were turned. When a human is turned into a vampire, their body tends to look the age they were previously, although there are some cases where they may lose or gain a couple years in age for reasons still unknown.
Of course, we cannot forget the lovely vampire fangs. In this world vampires have the ability to retract their fangs so they look like normal, human canines. When fully extended, they measure half an inch long on the top and a bit shorter on the bottom.
When a vampire shows their fangs, their eyes will either turn red, ice blue (almost white), or black. The eye colour has to do with their 'human' eye colour they have most of the time. Blue and green eyes usually turn an icy blue. Dark brown and grey eyes will turn black. Hazel and light/medium brown eyes will turn red.
Heightened Senses and Abilities: Vampires tend to have sense much stronger than they did when they were human. Their eyesight is top-notch, even giving them the ability to see well in the dark. They are able to detect subtle movements out of the corner of their eye, which can prove very beneficial. If one wishes to sneak up on a vampire, coming up behind them is the best method.
Their sense of smell is increased as well. They are able to tell, just by scent, what species something is, even if they cannot see it. After awhile they are able to determine different individuals by scent only. They are still able to smell the breeze, the trees, and cooking food from nearby homes, but their sense of smell is designed to detect living things with blood coursing through their veins.
A vampire's hearing is a wonderful tool. They can hear a mouse scurry across the floor in the next room. They have the ability to hear people whispering up to five metres away just as clear as if they were talking face to face. This ability also allows them to hear the faintest of heartbeats, letting them know if a creature has anything to offer them.
As for touch and taste, not much has changed except for the fact that the only thing a vampire wants to taste is blood. Vampires prefer human blood, but anything will suffice if they are hungry. They have learned to be careful about feeding on human blood since it tends to be a big deal if a shop owner disappears opposed to a stray mongrel out on the street.
Vampires in this world have the luxury of not breathing, although they did it so much as a human, they do it out of habit. Other abilities include; being twice as strong as they were when human, able to survive falls and impact, bones are hard to break, fast enough to keep up with galloping horses, no need to breath, and they can jump three times as high as when human.
Injury and Death: Vampires can be injured and they can be killed. Vampires heal at two times the rate humans do. If a vampire gets cut on the arm with a knife, instead of a month to fully heal, it will only take two weeks. They are also able to catch things like the common cold, though they will get over it faster.
Garlic, wild rose, and hawthorn are toxic to vampires. Not in a way that will kill them, but in such a way that can be compared with poison ivy to humans. Depending on the vampire some can have either no reaction to it, while others can have very severe cases.
A stake through the heart will not kill a vampire, but merely paralyze him until the stake is taken out. This leaves him completely defenseless and at his staker's mercy.
The sun will not cause a vampire to burst into flames, but will slowly cause them to become weaker and become progressively hotter. Their skin will then start to darken after quite some time, and if they haven't' collapsed from their weak state yet, they will suffer a horrible, boiling death. Therefore, vampires tend to want to stay out of the sunlight.
Any type of silver is acidic to vampires, eating away at their flesh. It takes a long time for silver burns to heal (not to mention that they are very painful). Shooting a vampire through either the heart or head with a silver bullet will result in an instantaneous death.
Other ways to kill a vampire include; beheading, burning, dismembering limbs from the body, letting the vampire bleed out without any other blood to fill them, and disemboweling them. Any other way and they are just injured to various degrees.
Feeding: Everyone knows that vampires feast on the blood from other living creatures. Vampires prefer the filling, flavourful taste of human blood, but most times they have to take animals so they don't arouse suspicion. Some vampires cares about concealing what they are while others don't care if they are hunted down for murder, just as long as they get what they want.
Vampires can eat and drink human food and beverages. Whatever they drink has no flavour and feels to them like it does to a human when they drink water when they are not thirsty. It is a bit unpleasant, but something that can be dealt with to keep suspicions low. As for human food, they can only eat small amounts, otherwise they will become extremely ill. It is tasteless and won't fill them up. Eating human food can be compared to eating a handful of dirt.
Sleeping: Vampires do need to sleep. They only need four or five hours of sleep to re-energize, but some choose to sleep longer, depending if they slept in as humans. Vampires like to sleep in colder environments. No light is one way to help with that. Another way is keeping a sort of insulated room for sleeping, and there are other ways that have been invented. A helpful hint from vampire to vampire is the less clothing you can sleep with, the better.
Sexual Activity and Genetics: Just as in old folklore, many vampires will try to seduce unsuspecting humans into their trap in whatever ways they need to so they can get what they want most; blood. Male vampires can have children with female humans, but the child will be fully human. Female vampires are unable to have children.
Male Vampire + Female Vampire = NO CHILD Male Vampire + Female Human = Human Child Male Human + Female Vampire = NO CHILD Male Vampire + Female Lycan = Halfling Male Lycan + Female Vampire = NO CHILD Male Vampire + Female Halfling = Child with Lycanthropy OR Human Child Male Halfling + Female Vampire = NO CHILD
Turning Someone into a Vampire: Vampires can only be turned into such if they were near death as a human. This was either achieved by natural causes (even things humans consider 'unnatural'), or a vampire who has already been turned may take almost all of the blood out of the human in order to bring them near death.
To turn them, almost all of the blood must be out of the body. The vampire sire will then feed the human some of his or her blood by cutting their arm for example. Once the dying human tastes the blood, they begin a quick, painful transformation that takes minutes. they then must take more blood from their sire in order to survive the transformation. The sire must then see to it that they take the newly turned vampire under their wing for a while until they have them under control and living as a respectable vampire. Of course, some choose not to follow this rule.
There are cases where a turning goes wrong and the human dies or goes into a coma for long periods of time, sometimes never coming out of it. If they ever do come out if they either successfully become a vampire, or they stay human and quickly die.
Vampires to not 'magically' get good looks when they are turned. They maintain the same appearance as they did as a human. The only thing that changes is the light skin (if they already do not have pale skin as a human) and the ability to produce fangs and change eye colour along with the protrusion of their fangs. Sometimes they gain or lose a few years in looks during the transformation. This is totally random and can occur to anyone of any age when they are turned.
Other: Most humans cannot tell if someone is a vampire or not, unless they have a trained eye. There are vampire hunters who make a good living doing what they do. There are also people, called blood-donors, who lend out portions of their blood to vampires. The find a strange pleasure in getting their lifeblood sucked out of their veins, and the vampires appreciate it. Vampires who have humans have an agreement that the humans will keep quiet about everything and the vampire will only take enough blood so that it won't greatly effect the human.
Animals tend to stay away from vampires, especially prey animals such as; many birds, horses, and other livestock. Dog and cats are very weary of them, but can tolerate them a bit more than prey animals can.
