In a universe, alternate to our own, there lies a planet that we are very familiar with. This planet is called Earth. It is mostly the same as our home; the countries, the languages, even the days of the week. The only thing serperating this world from the one we are so very familiar with is the slightly modified geography and some of the people residing on the Earth.
The Mediterranean Sea in this universe is almost double the size of the Mediterranean Sea that graces our world. The cause of this enlargement is due to the very large island that sits fifty miles south of southern Italy. This island was dubbed 'Paleo Island' by the British explorers who first decided to establish any type of civilization on the island. The Italians knew about it but never had any reason to use it. There were the men who would stop there on there travels, but they never thought to set up any kind of permenant structure. The British thought it would be a brilliant idea to create a port town focused on trade.
In the end everything worked out in favour for the British empire as they aqcuired Paleo Island as one of their territories and established Port Lucia. People from all over the world travel to the port town as well as live there. Over the years the town has been growing larger and larger with immigrants coming from every corner of the world. the primary language on the island is English, but there are those residents who have stuck to their native tongue. Nevertheless, everyone has seemed to work well together to make Port Lucia a thriving place.
__
Some of the natives of Paleo Island were fascinated with the newcomers as they called them. They were more than eager to trade with them and learn more about their society. Other tribes were not so sure about the newcomers and remained cautious. Then there were the tribes who hated the newcomers and wished them dead. They were ready at any moment to either attack or defend themselves from these strange people. They refused to have anything to do with them and hated the tribes that were associated with them even more.
Just as the natives had different views about these newcomers, the newcomers had different opinions about them. Many of the new comers either were fond of them since they brought in a lot of new business to Port Lucia, or they just did not care one way or another. There were the groups who saw them as evil and wanted to destroy them, thinking that they should have complete control of this uncivilized island.
Soon enough the newcomers who hated the natives, and vice versa, got into several scuffles that left people from both places seriously injured or dead. Some tribes unofficially declared war on the newcomers, seeing them for the evil people that they truly were. Other tribes were dragged into the mess and now some were questioning their alliances. The newcomers are now facing the same issue and some even wonder if a full fledged war is plausible in the near future.

In this universe beings that are only fictional to us are a reality to these people. Vampires and werewolves are becoming more and more common as thier on secretive orders are getting out of hand, and as rogues are turning unsuspecting humans into one of thier own kind. In the past fifty years halflings have begun to spring up. They are said to be more dangerous then just a vampire or a werewolf, but nothing has been proved either way.
__ The last aspect that separates this universe is the era and the way in which people live. As the years are set it is the twenty-first century*, but the society here is stuck in the ways and style of the Victorian era. Most Victorian ideals and fashions are prevelant, but some have been altered slightly to go with the times of change. One thing that has changed greatly is the technology. Many things are are made and used in a style that we would consider 'steampunk'.
